Pleunis Biochamp

Pleunis Biochamp chose to locate its business at the Agropolis site. What do they do? Grow organic mushrooms. Why choose to do so at Agropolis? Read all about it here!

Pleunis Biochamp cultivates organic mushrooms including shiitake, oyster, king oyster, shimeji and maitake. The Pleunis family have been experts in growing mushrooms since the 1960s. In 2009, manager Koert Pleunis decided to focus on growing speciality mushrooms in a more sustainable way.

All Pleunis mushrooms are grown organically: no crop protection substances are used and the energy required is generated by solar panels. The water used to grow their mushrooms comes from the CIRO water grid and is used to cool the cultivation rooms. The mushrooms grow on hay and sawdust, which is scattered onto the land as an organic material once the cultivation cycle is complete. Fresh hay is then grown on the land in due course, completing the resource cycle.

“Pleunis Biochamp chose to build its own shed at the Agropolis site. The land on which our site is built is owned on a leasehold basis, which was the main factor attracting us to Agropolis as a location. The utilities and connections to the cooling and heat grid offered the perfect alternatives for us to generate energy in a sustainable way. We feel right at home here! As far as the future is concerned, demand for organic mushrooms is likely to continue to grow, so who knows, we might be expanding in a few years’ time”, manager Koert Pleunis comments.
